Steam Railroad

One of the most unique features of our steam show is the operating full size steam railroad that runs during the show.  The rides takes riders on a 1 mile trip around the parameter of the show grounds.  Our train is powered by ex-Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive #643, a 1901 product of the PRR's Altoona Shops.  643 is a class B4a 0-6-0 switching locomotive.  She was retired from the PRR sometime in the 19-teens and spend the next 30 years working at a steel mill in Harrisburg.  Purchased by the WGHSEA in 1960 as #5, and later restored to her original number, she has been a crowd pleaser ever since.

2001 was a special year for #643.  In June of 2001 #643 turned 100 years old.  Special events took place to celebrate this significant birthday during our September 2001 steam show.  These included a special ceremony, in which #643 was given special recognition by the State of Pennsylvania, and birthday cake for all!  This made #643 one of the few century old locomotives regularly operated  in the nation.

After the 2001 show 643 began her logest period of inactivity since she was built in 1901.  From September 2001- May 2006 #643 underwent extensive repairs to her boiler and frame.  On Easter Sunday 2006 #643 was steamed for the first time in nearly 5 years.  She is now back in action and ready to steam for years to come.

643 passes our other locomotive, Whitcomb #8, that served us well during 643's hiatus.
